PALISI Approved Survey: Increasing Efficiency and Value: Objective Referral Criteria for Palliative Care After a TBI

Dear Colleague,
You are invited to participate in a research study focused on developing expert
consensus regarding referral criteria for palliative care consultation following
moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children and adolescents. This
study has been approved by the institutional review board at Akron Children’s
Hospital (IRB# 2026-072).
This study is being conducted by investigators at Akron Children’s Hospital as
part of a broader project designed to improve equitable, evidence-informed
access to palliative care services for children with significant TBI. We are seeking
participation from healthcare professionals who provide clinical care to children
and/or families affected by pediatric TBI. Eligible participants include physicians,
advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, chaplains, child life
specialists, therapists, care managers, bereavement specialists, psychologists, and
other clinicians involved in the care of pediatric TBI patients. Participants should
have substantial clinical involvement in pediatric care and experience caring for
children with TBI.
Participation involves completion of a series of three surveys using REDCap,
distributed over approximately four months. Each survey is expected to require
approximately 15–20 minutes to complete. A draft set of referral criteria have
been developed locally. This study will use a Delphi process to develop consensus.
Participants will be asked to rate the importance and clinical appropriateness of
proposed referral criteria and provide narrative feedback. In subsequent rounds
you will see items have consensus and review those that do not alongside your
ranking, the group median, and an opportunity to re-rank those items. Responses
are confidential but not fully anonymous, as participant names and email
addresses must be retained temporarily in order to distribute subsequent survey
rounds, though they will be deleted following completion of the final survey.
Demographic information (professional role, specialty, years of experience, and
sex) will be collected for aggregate analysis only. Individual responses will not be
identified in publications or presentations.
Participation is voluntary and there are no anticipated direct benefits. However,
your expertise may contribute to the development of standardized, equitable
referral practices.
Recipients are encouraged to share this invitation and survey link with other
qualified healthcare professionals who meet the eligibility criteria. Redistribution
through professional networks, listservs, and social media platforms (including
X/Twitter) is permitted and encouraged for recruitment purposes, provided the
invitation is shared only with individuals likely to meet study eligibility criteria.
